Smart Grid Engineer, Data Center Consulting (2299)

Silver Spring Networks, Inc. (SSNI) is seeking highly-motivated individuals to join our team of Smart Grid Engineers. You will be part of a team that helps SSNI's customers design, implement, and operate SSNI solutions.
In this role, you will assist the customer in architecting, implementing, and validating SSNI solution components that include hardware, virtual machines, operating systems, and application software.
The ideal candidate will have experience in data center implementations on spinning and solid-state hardware, virtualization, sizing, performance, high availability/reliability, security, and backup/restore. You must be well-versed in IT operations and fully able to support integrations with switches, routers, storage devices, operating systems, and VMWare virtualization.

Required Skills
Engage with customer staff to scope, design, document, implement and deliver SSNI solutions.
Thoroughly understand SSNI applications and backoffice infrastructure.
Understand and follow customer processes, write change requests, document configurations.
Conform to, establish, and enforce best practices for server and networking standards.
Install, configure, and maintain SSNI software applications.
Write shell/Perl/Python/other scripts to automate activities.
Collaborate with SSNI, third-parties, and the customer to design and implement solutions using APIs/web services.
Document and escalate issues that cannot be resolved on site. Escalation will include using SSNI Customer Support for support issues and the involvement of product managers as appropriate.
Participate in customer core teams to aid in the customer's understanding of SSNI product capabilities to support future enhancements.
Serve as a knowledge expert to the utilities and provide consulting and hands-on training on SSNI products, applications, networking, and processes.
Support pre-deployment activities such as lab-based evaluations and other pre-deployment testing which will require a comprehensive understanding of application environments deployed at the customer as well as the intended uses by the customer.
Ensure the ongoing success of the SSNI solution through monitoring, communication with customer staff, product updates, and industry knowledge.
This position is based in Portland, Oregon, and will require occasional travel to our corporate offices in San Jose, CA, and potential domestic and international travel to customers.
Required Experience
7 or more years of experience at an IT consulting firm or large corporate IT environment or broad IT scope at a smaller company.
Experience interacting with large customers, requiring collaboration with and managing requirements and input from multiple departments.
Ability to effectively manage customer relationships.
Exceptional customer service skills.

Multiple years of hands-on experience with:
Oracle database concepts, e.g. Automatic Storage Management, Recovery Manager, DataGuard
Process development, documentation, and execution
SAN/NAS storage technologies
Linux; installing and configuring the system and applications, navigation
Windows Server; installing and configuring the system and applications, navigation
Scripting, e.g. Perl, Python, PHP
System management tools
Logical file systems
Client/Server environments
VMWare configuration and optimization
Networking, teaming, wireless
Interpreting application, server, and Splunk logs
DNS principles and architectures
TCP/IP networking, ideally including IPv6
Working knowledge of:
Security issues and best practices in virtual environments
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas and designs to both technical and non-technical staff.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner with an extended team of peers.
Experience with the Microsoft Office Suite.
Experience with using customer support applications such as Remedy & Jira.

Self-motivated; able to demonstrate initiative and risk-taking.
Excellent time management skills.
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree or equitable degree plus work experience in Computer Science, Engineering, or similar technical discipline.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
