Job Description- Grocery Assistant Manager
Department: Grocery
Reports to: Grocery Manager
Position Description: Partners with Grocery Manager to manage Grocery department operations, including ordering, inventory control, merchandising, food safety, work safety, communication, training and supervision of staff. Provides exceptional customer service and product knowledge. Provides leadership in line with company values, promotes a positive and progressive work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
A. Supervisory Responsibilities
Assists Grocery Manager in the management of the Grocery department and the coordination of duties.
Works a schedule opposite to the Grocery Manager, allowing overlap for meetings and trainings.
Assesses, prioritizes and delegates tasks. Provides support as needed.
Supervises, trains, monitors and supports Grocery department staff. Promotes the highest standards of customer service, accuracy, food safety and work safety. Provides on-the-floor leadership. Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and work ethic.
Learns and assists with all duties and responsibilities performed by the Grocery Manager, working towards promotion to a management position. Assumes duties of Grocery Manager as needed.
Develops Grocery Clerks, Grocery Leads, Freight Clerks, Freight Leads and Freight PIC to prepare staff for professional growth.
May be involved in hiring of Grocery Department staff.
Participates in performance reviews and recommends progressive discipline action.
Assists the Grocery Manager with the creation of weekly schedules that ensure adequate coverage of the department. Reviews the schedule weekly and recommends improvements or solutions to deficiencies.
Ensures that the Grocery Department is clean, orderly and stocked at all times.
Coordinates actions with those of co-workers so that the department operates smoothly. Ensures that all Grocery staff receive breaks and lunches.
Notifies Grocery Manager of any situations relating to customer service, work safety, food safety, productivity, performance, security or any situation that may have an adverse effect on the store. Assists in finding solutions.
Maintains effective communication with managers and co-workers.
Understands daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly expectations of the department and leads staff to meet these expectations.
Creates a warm, welcoming and supportive work environment with friendliness, understanding, consistency, flexibility, and adaptability .
B. Position Specific Functions
Stocks and rotates products with attention to product quality and expiration dates.
Fronts and faces products throughout shift. Ensures consistency of department conditions.
Completes customer special orders thoroughly and provides follow-through as needed.
Assists with receiving and unloading merchandise; checks quality, count and condition. Communicates any issues to management and merchandising team.
Maintains the organization, rotation and cleanliness of the backstock areas.
Ensures department compliance with all company organic standards.
Understands and complies with specific shift guidelines, tasks and responsibilities.
Handles damaged and past-date product according to company policy.
Writes daily and weekly orders that ensure proper inventory levels to meet sales and margin goals.
Maintains accurate pricing and signage that meet merchandising standards. Ensures sign walks and signage requests are conducted daily to ensure accuracy.
Processes and logs invoices, credits and transfers in a timely and accurate manner.
Plans for and participates in inventories. Consistently follow department inventory procedures.
Adapts to daily scheduling needs. Trains to use Kronos and write weekly schedule that ensures proper staffing levels in order to meet labor budget and provides adequate coverage for holidays and events.
Demonstrates an understanding of labor, sales and margin goals and factors that influence them.
Reads and understands product and merchandising information, including emails and Sharepoint.
Demonstrates understanding of Grocery terminology and product labeling.
Demonstrates excellent knowledge and familiarity with products in the department, including recommended uses, product labeling, vendor/supplier information with ability to continue learning.
C. Customer Service Responsibilities
Exemplifies excellent customer service and coaches staff to do the same.
Engages the customer in a friendly manner, shares product Information, assists in locating product throughout the store, seeks opportunities to exceed customer expectations and enhance the customer experience.
Adapts service based on customer needs, handles difficult customer situations and seeks solutions to delight the customer.
Accommodates customer requests through special orders when possible.
Monitors Grocery Department from the customer perspective to ensure a positive customer experience.
Provides on-the-floor and phone service.
Assists customers in locating products throughout the store and demonstrates general knowledge of store and products throughout.
D. General
Observes all store rules. Observes policies listed in the New Seasons Market Staff Handbook.
Promotes and contributes to a collaborative team environment.
Speaks up. Shares ideas and feedback that contribute to success of store and company.
Listens and reads, understands and follows through on verbal and written directions.
Demonstrates ability to multi-task and manage own time. Adjusts priorities, productivity, efficiency and speed based on needs and conditions of department and store.
Responds to feedback in order to improve performance.
Acts as a steward of company resources and Mission, Vision and Values by training, modeling and promoting sustainable behaviors/operations.

G. Facilities, Sanitation, Work Safety and Food Safety
Promotes work and food safety policies set forth by the company and regulatory agencies.
Demonstrates awareness of common allergens and food borne illness. Reduces risk of cross-contamination through proper product handling and production practices.
Performs janitorial tasks in compliance to sanitation standards established by store policy and state and local health departments. Ensures cleanliness of the Grocery department and contributes to all-store cleanliness.
Maintains equipment, informs Operations Manager/Grocery Manager of any problems.
Reports all safety concerns and work related injuries to management.
Qualifications and Experience
Passion for exceptional customer service required.
Retail experience required, high-volume environment and grocery experience preferred.
Supervisory experience strongly preferred.
Ordering/inventory management experience required.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite required. Knowledge of time-keeping, and applicant tracking software preferred.
Ability to understand, follow and give written and verbal instructions.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff and customers.
Ability to train, coach and hold staff accountable.
Ability to document and resolve problems, conflicts and issues in accordance with New Seasons Market Code of Conduct.
Ability to give and receive feedback in a constructive manner.
Ability to work independently, effectively manage own time and multi-task in a fast-paced, high production environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with department and store management team
Ability to plan, prioritize and delegate work.

Ability to learn new systems such as POS, scales, etc.
Permits and Licenses: Varies by state.
Supervisory Responsibility: Collaborates with Grocery Manager to supervise all Grocery department staff members.
Physical Requirements
Consistently required to stand, walk, stoop, crouch, kneel/squat, bend, reach, push and pull, twist and turn, grasp, talk, listen and hear. This may require fine finger manipulations and repetitive motions with hands and feet.
Frequently required to climb ladders and step stools.
As needed, position may require sitting, crawling and climbing stairs.
Consistently required to lift up to 20 pounds without assistance. Frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
Work performed frequently requires medium physical strength.
Consistently required to use near and peripheral vision, in addition to depth perception.
May use the following machines, tools and equipment:
Box knife, Baler, Scanner, Lift/heister, Pallet jack, Ladder, Phone/fax, Cart, Hand truck, Price gun, Temp gun, Computer
Work Environment
Includes working in refrigerated areas and on surfaces that can be wet and slippery.
Maintains a moderate to loud noise level.
Working with exposure to dust, mold, gluten, fragrances and other fumes and airborne particles, fresh fruits, vegetables, house plants, and flowers.
Working in proximity to and using common commercial cleaning agents.
Frequent hand-washing is required.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
